The Two Week wait

SO many women go through the struggle of the two week wait before they can finally take a pregnancy test. Personally, I would take a pregnancy test almost everyday (okay lets be honest sometimes multiple times a day) hoping to finally get that plus sign. That two week wait is enough to drive us crazy.

It doesn’t have to be that way though. Our body gives us some obvious and not so obvious signs that we are pregnant when it does happen – you just have to know what to look for!

Signs of Early Pregnancy

When I got pregnant I just knew it, even before I could take the test and you can to! Here are some things you should look out for in early pregnancy, even before that positive test confirms it!

Being a mom is hard work, we were designed to create life and that is not an easy job! I have never experienced anything like the exhaustion of pregnancy before in my life. For me this started right away! I felt like no matter how much sleep I got, I never felt totally rested. This makes sense, though right? Think about your body and how it is going into overdrive creating a safe environment and then nourishing your little one so he or she can grow.

Even though it is called “morning sickness”, don’t be naïve, this lovely side effect of all the hormones can  be an all day experience for some women. If you suddenly find your stomach doing flip flops with no other explanation, this could be a sign you are pregnant.

Sore Breasts

Although this is a symptom many women experience around the time of their period starting, breast tenderness can actually be a sign of your body preparing to produce milk for breastfeeding. Even though you wont be feeding your little one anytime in the near future, your body gets to work right away to make sure that its prepared for when your sweet little baby arrives.

Other Changes to your Breasts

Darkening areolas (the round dark skin surrounding your nipple), tingling and an increase in breast size due to hormones are some other common signs that you may be pregnant.

Increased Urge to Void

Many women think this is a problem that only occurs in the third trimester like in the movies that depict a waddling pregnant woman on her way to the bathroom. Think again, this symptom can occur early and only gets worse once your uterus starts to press on your bladder.

Dizziness & Headaches

Did you know your body makes a ton of extra blood when you become pregnant? All that extra fluid means your heart has to work a bit harder to circulate it and consequently you can feel a bit dizzy/ faint and have a headache. This usually subsides as your body adjusts.

Heightened Sensitivity to Smells

Suddenly find the smell of coffee repulsive? You may be pregnant; Nausea from smells – even ones you previously loved – are a common pregnancy symptom for many women because of a heightened sense of smell. The coffee thing was mine… it really helped me to cut back in my caffeine intake though!

There I was eating a BBQ lays potato chip layered with a slice of apple and piece of cheese as my husband stared at me like I had three heads. I couldn’t have been happier in that moment and I don’t even like cheese!

Strange or intense cravings are a common sign of pregnancy! This was the sign that tipped me off.

Pants a little snug? Suddenly look like you are 6 months pregnant? Yup, another sign you might be pregnant! You might not have gained a single pound yet from the pregnancy but it is not uncommon to retain some fluid as your body adjusts to the hormones.

Mood Swings

If you were to ask my husband in my presence he would say this wasnt true – he’s a smart man! Think of this symptom as PMS (but worse) thanks to those lovely hormones. Pregnancy can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Don’t worry it does get better!

Spotting and Cramping

Sometimes a light period like discharge can actually be a sign of implantation and is commonly mistaken for a period by many women.

Vivid Dreams

I’m not even sure how to elaborate on this except by saying you will think they are real and try not to get mad at your spouse! Thankfully my husband just rolled with the punches!

There you have it!

Hopefully this list can confirm your pregnancy for you before you take the pregnancy test! Good luck and remember that even though the two week wait is so hard, it is all worth it when that little baby arrives at the end of it all.

Have you experienced any other signs of pregnancy early on? Id love to hear from you in the comments!
